Why are you interested in Alternative Energy?
I have been interested in alternative energy ever since the early 1970's
when we used lantern at our cabin in the woods. We also used battery powered flaslights and the batteries didn't last real long so you had to save using them for when it was necessary. I started dreaming about a better way to light the cabin. The best solution at the time was a single candle and going to bed early. The radio we had seemed to work for two weeks on a set of batteries why not a light like the dome lights found in vehicles. This got me to thinking in 12 volts and reading about wind generators. By 1979 I had the idea I would have a wind turbine power a bank of 12 volt batteries. Since I had helped build the cabin and we had land I thought alot about building my own place and studied component building systems. Mostly these where geodesic domes. I dreamed of fabricating all the peices in my back yard then loading all my building components onto a fourwheel drive dumptruck we had at the time and unloading it all on the mountain side ready to fasten together. I also thought of how to heat and what sort of lighting to have. It was in the early ninghties that I came across American Ingenuity domes in popular science magazine. I loved the idea I could erect my building components and fasten them all together with morter mix hawk and trowel. This system is still superior to current house construction methodes. I promote the company because I belive it to be a superior effecient structure that can save you half the heating and cooling bills you currently paying plus it has great potential to beat everything else out there in the hybrid house competitions. Super insulated thermal shell, rodent and insect proof. hurrican proof it's really worth considering. These domes have been built in all fifty states. What do domes have to do with energy well how about everything. 40% of all energy expended is used to heat and cool structures. I would love to combine alt energy and alt housing a hybrid system zero emmision net gain!

energy markets

I wonder what effect the following is going to have on global markets for energy. When China shuts down it's coal fired power plants so the smog can clear for the olimpic games this has to require a lot of people either conserving energy of doing without it. China is doing a market manipulation using the games as a marketing tool to seel the world on their ability to produce alternative enery products cheap the games is their chance to put their product in the spotlight for close to free. China… Continue

our energy usage

When it comes to our energy use this is how it breaks down according to recent reports we use about 50% of our energy we consume for transportation. That covers every mode and to reduce this use and increase the effeciency of the fossil fuels we are using I've been promoting the idea of under the hood hydrogen generation using 12 volt power from the autos alternator to run an electrolyser and the hydrogen gas thus produced is directly consumed by the internal combustion engine increasing milage… Continue

printable solar panels

On the main page there is an article about nano solar a company who has developed a printable solar panel.

I can remember reading about a Japanese company who had the printing technology in the mid nighties it printed solar collectors by the cell on a ceramic media. This made for heavy solar panels and was not competative with silicon solar cells. But printing technology has come a long way in twenty years. And technology has a way of not getting fully developed. Once a certain process…

hydrogen is available for fuel today why aren't we using it?

We currently could be using hydrogen all across the united states. With under the hood hydrogen generating technology your not storing any hydrogen you are simply using it as it's produced. Storing hydrogen takes special tanks and the hydrogen tends to evaporate. There are a couple of benifits to the under the hood technology first you increase the effeciency of what ever fuel your burning. gasoline, diesel fuel, propane, natural gas or methanol biofuel by adding hydrogen into the fuel just prio…

Interesting new energy effecient house on the internet. I was google searching domes when I came across a video on you tube about Canadian Wooden Domes. These dome houses use 50% less energy to heat and cool and can be built in a shorter time frame than conventional housing. Good solution for people who's houses were lost in the California wildfires. with foundation in place and building permits these units in fifty foot diameter size could be put up in a couple weeks. See the time lapse video 5 hours for 30 foot dome. wooden igloo of sorts looks likew hobbit village but that (green ) these days thats cool. And that insurence money the check could buy $30 grand in solar and 10 grand in radiant and ten grand in groundsource heat pumps. adds up to bought and paid for never to cost you that much again. average check was 250,000 but they couldn't rebuild because contractors quoted $500,000 who need that much house a fifty foot dome and an arch shaped two car garage to keep you junk in. oh yea your junk burned cars are designed to be left out in the weather and if you had house insurence your cars probably covered too. Could be the best thing that ever happen to you.
your neighbors will want to buy your place no dought.

I want to here about what we can do to cut back on our energy use. do you think if we all stayed home for a day and used as little power as we could it would have an effect that might then benifit all of us. If it is a market based supply and demand system wouldn't lack of demand drive prices back down
or would we just stay home and use twice as much energy entertaining ourselves in front of the TV ect.

I just wanted to talk a little about the potential of peco-energy this is where you generate more than you use in small quanities so you always have just enough energy to get done what you can with what available. In a sense it's sustainable and it's alternative energy as well because the alternative is to go out and earn enough money to just continue paying wath ever their asking. Everyone knows this can reach a threshold. Can you heat your house with the doors open I think not. In peco wind energy generation technology might lead us to use new lightweight materials, newer energy storage media or transmission materials such as superconducters, lightweight metal alloys or carbon fiber composits. In peco energy generation the machines or tools we are atempting to use need but little power to opperate. For instance cell phones by them selves may not consume much power but collectively worldwide comsume tremendious quanities of power and create waste materials. We have gone on a fast track with cell phone technology as the service providers have found a model that works for them make money off you then use it to make some more money off you. you know their plan they sell you is their plan it's their plan to make money off you and they are sucessful.
We have learned to expect more for our dollars, features, incentives, convience
these devices have really evolved and alot can be done on a trickel of electricity. If we wanted to we could charge our phones off a small solar array
maybe even the one advertised on the home page here. We could re-charge our phones off conventional AA batteries they sell an adaptor specfically for that purpose good idea to have one in the glove box just in case of emergency and say you forgot to pack your car charger and are running low on battery life and about out of gas wish you would of listened and bout one of each. Next generation peco devices may use even less juice as memory becomes cheaper in cell phones and other devices they may not need
as many energy consuming components. You knowby buying the phones with the tiny screens we are paying for the development of ever larger screens for devices. DVD,navigation,TV reception pretty soon the whole digital convergence will culminate in an all in one system you simply speak to and let it know what you want to do. going to lunch where the closest
place to grab a sandwitch, want to find your way there just ask the nav system
or call home no problem. I suggest that these systems will all end up in a frame hanging on the wall like in the jetsons cartoon an all in one entertainment, automation and energy conservation system one that meters electricity to you. Everyone will by then be on an energy diet will will have all cut back on our consumption some and we all should be using less anyways.
The days of wastefull leaking appliances will have ended gone the way fuel wasting SUVs and forced air heating. replaced by new confort zones where
the sweet spot is in front and center of the entertainment node or front and center of the on board on the way to work and back. It's been about the
radio about the eight track the cassette the CD and the Blue ray DVD the flash memory changer and the gps and navigation systems. it is on board computing handheld devices and bluetooth cordless and handfree and now sync yes you can tell it what to do and that pretty neat even though Ford didn't invent it like they like for you to think. So what could the future of Peco energy look like. They predicted we may not even be able to see it so built in and small are computer susposed to get that the next thing you know it's the size of the memory chip that used to slide into it. That be great if it were true because we surely could run that dime size unit off the sun. What else could we pray we could have the technology available to most everyone who wants it and the reason would be what they used to call the technology divide the have and have not's must after all learn to get along. We can have cheap available technology and simple is sometimes alot better than so sophisticated I just haven't learned how to operate the darn thing.
Peco energy would look like that it be like a phone card you could buy one with the minutes you can afford. Goverment doesn't seem to be able to reduce the cost we are paying for energy at the pump and in the grocery store
so I guess we will just have to learn to use less. We all ready have learned to do so much more with less because we had to. I propose that cars will go electric and up that voltage to 48 volt systems and we should be cutting our consumption at home of electricity back by buying devices that work in the car and at home. We are doing that how many people carry laptops and cell phones that surf the net. lighter computers and bigger screens better backlighting crisper sound more vibrant colors we are getting there and on a lot less juice than before. They claim 48 volt systems in cars and house will
arrive at a one size fits all energy source peco energy may be code for 48 volts at home and in the car solar powered maybe so,windpowered could be
battery powered maybe by then who can say. peco power is here today go to Voller.com generators that charge a laptop generate 120 volts AC with no fumes no noise and they make pure water. The world with less energy looks like a great place to be. beam me up scotty

Jay thx so much for all the info and support. I was talking with Glen Roberts the other day and we all have plenty in common. I want to tell u more in depth of how the plan all works. I have designed a semi-permanant composite structure that erects by one person in 45-60 mins. As Glen and I were talking these also could be augmented as reusable molds for pouring (casting) adobe. I found it intriguing enuff to see a mutation of it's original design. I believe u should chat with Glen Roberts as well. He's a smart cookie and a hell of a fisherman. All of us crazy ocean kayakers are haha! I have some hydro electrical(tidal) generators to discuss with u also. A little background: I have 24 yrs of avi/marine composites experience. So if u need any out of the box designer thinking give me a shout and thx again. Kev

Imagine the windturbine in my only photo being made of styrofoam weighing
less than 100 lbs total. Now imagine it being levitated by rare earth magnets able to efortlessly sping like a gyroscope now imagine usefull energy being produced by the light breeze you sometimes feel on your property. My idea here is to get you imagine one in your yard. I think you probably have considered solar arrays and the cost had you concerned. In the fiture with energy prices going up and staying up we are all paying too much for energy.
This will spur on innovation in designs of all sorts of alternative energy products. I happen to think that people should be able to afford alternative energy products. Solar needs to come down in price by alot and systems once they are in the affordable range will be purchased and hybrid systems that incorporate wind and solar are pretty attractive. With netmetering you get paid for electricity you produce using alternative energy like solar and wind energy your meter runs backward as you produce and as you consume it runs forwards. This does two things it gives you incentive to conserve as your goal is to save money on energy or at least pay a lot less because you produce most of what you use.

In reply to Chris For the rotor designed turbines a incorporated flywheel design would be attractive. I've been looking into a motor designed for a bicycle
front wheel hub as a prototype for a incorporated flywheel it is called a pancake motor. The materials are neodynium
a rare earth metal used to make very strong magnets. Iseries of 48 volt products this pancake motor concept is one that might have several applications. one used as both motor and generator as in regenerative braking. The 48 volt rotor / generator would be used in vertical axis or savonius wind turbines as a generator built into the bottom rotor so it would be direct drive and hopefully levitated as well using repulsive magnetic forces
The neodynium magnets currently have limitations in the size that they can be manufactured in hopefully that can be overcome.and adventually the larger magnets will have enough force to be able to levitate 100lbs A pancake motor 46 inches in diameter and about four inchs thick and 48 volt so that it might charge four conventional gel cell batteries at once . and would be getting close enough to be a drive motor for small cars
problem always comes back to batteries. Hopefully that will be surpassed with fuel cells. If we could use these vertical axis windturbines to produce hydrogen and turn that to low voltage (48 volt DC) power and transmit that to where ever it is needed using existing power lines. I can see a world with 48 volt flatpanel monitors TV/PC both 48 volt, fridge 48 volt, lights 48 volt OLED
For heat 48 volt radiant heat electric or hydronic. 48 volts is enough to run your lap top charge your cell phone brew you a cup of java and 48 volts might be enough capacity to take on a charge from solar array on the roof and in the front and back glass of your car your electric car. A hybrid system utilizing solar array, wind turbine and a fuel cell could conceivably allow you to
produce all your own energy someday but for convience lets say we just netmeter the hybrid system. The the question becomes affordability what can we do to get the cost of these system down over time the cost of fossil fuels and the cost of alternative energy will meet in the middle it will be what drives more interest in alternative energy. Most of it will come from conservation
of resources as we can only pay for what we can pay for no more.

READING ABOUT FLYWHEEL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS THEY ARE PUTTING IN AT TACHAPIE WINDFARM IN CALIFORNIA THEY ARE GOING TO UTLIZE FLYWHEELS TO MODERATE ENERGY OUTPUT FROM THE WINDFARMS TO THE GRID. THIS IS A FANTASTIC IDEA IT ALLOWS THE ENERGY OUTPUT TO COME ONLINE WHEN IT'S NEEDED DURING PEAK
DEMAND HOURS AND THEN THE FLYWHEELS ARE SPUNN BACK UP
WHEN THE TURBINES ARE PRODUCING. A FLYWHEEL STORES ENERGY BY SPINNING ITS SPEED UP TO THOUSANDS OF REVOLUTIONS PER SECOND. THEY ARE OPERATED IN A VACUUM
USUALLY AND HAVE NEAR FRICTIONLESS BEARINGS. THIS ALLOWS THE FLYWHEEL TO RETAIN ITS SPEED FOR DAYS AND WEEKS WITHOUT THE NORMAL LOSES FROM OUTSIDE FORCES AS LITTLE EFFECTS IT OPERATION ENERGY IS DRAWN DOWN FROM THE FLYWHEEL OVER A PERIOD OF TIME ITS SPEED DECREASES
AND WHEN ENERGY IS APPLIED ITS SPEED INCREASES
LIKE A ELECTRIC BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM THE SYSTEM CAN BE REPEATEDLY RECHARGED AND DRAWN DOWN. THE GREATEST BENIFIT TO COMBINING WINDTURBINES AND FLYWHEELS IS THE ABILITY TO CALL ON POWER WHEN ITS NEEDED AS APPOSED TO WHEN ITS PRODUCED. COAL FIRED POWER PLANTS MUST HAVE GENERATORS ON STANDBY AWAITING HIGHER DEMAND WITH FLYWHEELS THIS DEMAND COULD BE ANSWERED FROM THE ENERGY STORED IN MASSIVE FLYWHEELS. ONE OF THE PIONEERS OF THE ELECTRIC FLYWHEEL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS IS ROSEN
MOTORS THEY DEVELOPED A FLYWHEEL ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM
AND RAN ONE OF THE FIRST TEST FLYWHEEL POWERED VEHICLES EVER CREATED.

ALL THESE 42 VOLT THINGS RUNNING OFF THE SUNS ENERGY
IMAGINE THE DAY YOU NEED NO OVERHEAD OR BURIED POWER LINE NO UTILITY COMPANY CHECKING YOUR METER, YOU HAVE 42 VOLT POWER CAN SUCH A SYSTEM WORK DOES HAVING MORE POWER HELP AND CAN THINGS BE PORTABLE AT 42 VOLTS OR ARE THEY TO HOT AND TOO HEAVY. TOO LOUD MAYBE TOO LOUD
TECHNOLOGY HAS A WAY OF CREEPING UP ON US AND RENDERING EVERYTHING WE CURRENTLY HAVE USELESS OLD WIN 95 LAPTOPS
THOSE CELL PHONES WITH DEAD BATTERIES THEIR CHARGERS
THE OLD SYSTEMS DON'T DO NEW SOFTWARE AND NEW ONES WON'T HAVE FLOPPY DISCS OR BLUE RAY DOES NOT RECOGNIZE MY
DVD COLLECTION. IS 42 VOLTS GOING TO BE UNIVERSAL OR SOON THERE AFTER WILL WE CHANGE AGAIN TO 54 VOLTS?

We may soon start making gasoline from coal. While this is not a alternative energy it's still based on fossil fuels it is a proven technology. Countries like South Africa have been refining their gasoline this way since the 1950's. production of
fuel from coal could start as soon as 2010. These fuels burn with 90% less emissions. With the cost of crude oil reaching $100 per barrel this method of fuel production may catch on in the United States and China this factor alone could reduce greenhouse emissions. A similar refining method could be applied to natural gas. I also understand that a company called clean world technologies is developing a method to reduce our landfill garbage into speciality chemicals and fuel. Susposed to be an odarless technology. So as long as it doesnt stink or pollute I'm all for it. The idea of turning
garbage into fuel without raising a stink is great. Wasn't that one of the troublesome problems facing alot of municipalities
what to do with the landfill. This isn't the landfill gas technology it is a pressure vessel bio reactor. The way I understand it it uses pressure and temperature to break down the garbage and re-formes those elements back into long chain carbons
guess it must break down the plastic and turn it back into petrolium. Changing World technologies probably has a site on the web I haven't looked! Sounds to me like you can make fuel out of alot of things if you have to. Goatweed bio diesel
soybeans, corn, hemp, wood grain alcohol, sewage and garbage might as well use it for fuel. I like the idea of total recycling every molecule maybe we will start looking closer at what we put in the things we make just to make them eye appealing
I think about how food is wrapped in plastic and plastic costs like 20 compared to making fuel at three dollars when using
fossil fuels to make plastic. Burning plastic is not good for the enviroment. Burning garbage has to release all those inks and dyes into the atomosphere. Changing world technologies system breaks it back down to molecules and joins those back together to form oils and chemicals. The residue from the prosess is non-toxic thats what makes it attractive. Several sewage systems in Japan create enough gaseous fuel to run the treatment plant. Also there is a sewage treatment system called living systems that treat sewage using bio reactor method these systems discharge only clean drinking water into the rivers. A nice thing to know if you get your water from a river any river. There are solutions
go find thses and once you convinced yourself tell others answers abound clean methodes to do what big oil won't do.
