  • Obtained a grant

Status of Solar Power

I read an interview with Rhone Resch. He is the president of Solar Energy Industry Association. He was disappointed the energy bill didn't include tax benefits for solar installations. Ye he sounded hopeful that people are really engaged and will fight to make sure that the tax benefits do not terminate at the end of 2008.

Also, he gave a pretty interesting bit of data. He said taht the cost of solar has dropped 95% since 1980. That's pretty amazing

Hi Wyatt
Our system cost us about $14,000 (looking at a $1000 per year savings for a15 year payoff) of which half of that was for driliing seven 100+ foot holes. We probably had one of the most difficult spots in NC to drill (very hard, fractured granite) and we were very limited on land. If you decide to go vertical, then hook up with a local, knowledgable drilling company - while the ground can change dramatically just a few feet in either direction, if you have the best info before drilling it should save you on time and cost. We went geoexchange, copper with R22. If cooling is your highest concern, then geo beats solar hands down. If heating is your highest concern, then you might wnat to do some cost comparison with other alternative energy. Living in NC, cooling is much more important than heating. Geo works fine for our winters - even with the snow we had yesterday ! If you live up north (we lived in Milwaukee for 6 years) you'll probably need more/deeper wells. We would definitely install a geo system again. It really is a great way to heat and cool our home. Any other questions, just let me know.
